Where is the largest Dog Shelter in the world?
The Land of Strays is the biggest no-kill animal shelter in the world. Territorio de Zaguates, or Land of the Strays, is a dog sanctuary in Costa Rica where 1,800 stray dogs have found a home.
The way the shelter works is by rescuing the dogs from the streets of Costa rica, getting them fed, neutered and rehabilitated with the aim of them being set up for life better to find a home.
The shelter is famed for its approximately 378 acres of tropical mountain land where scores of canines stroll, frolic, and race alongside human visitors, shelter employees, and volunteers. The vast majority of the animals are up for adoption and visitors can bring their own dogs to play with the rescues.
The amazing place was founded by Lya Battle and Alvaro Saumet. They’ve explained that a most of the dogs they rescue are in “the worst shape they could possibly be in; malnourished, sick, old or hurt”. This means that “many of them require long and expensive medical treatment, including exams, surgeries and physical therapy”. They receive no help from the government and are only able to exist thanks to donations. The average cost of each rescue runs around $36 per dog — which provides food, shelter and health care for each animal.
